Paradise

It's only been two weeks since I returned from Peru, but it feels like a lifetime ago. My to-do list has been never-ending, with only 8 days total being at home between then and leaving for Saskatchewan in just under 2 weeks from now.

In the last two weeks, I've flown to Saskatchewan to meet the movers and get the keys to my place, keeping an ungodly schedule with my saint of a cousin. We arrived at 1 am on the Saturday, and departed at 3 am on the Sunday, having breakfast in the 24 hr Denny's with those eating something after the bar. Like I said, ungodly.

I have half-assed started exercising again, but trying to beat a monster of a cold and catch up on rest meant that it was half-assed indeed. Circuit training and running / jogging. It was better than nothing, but I've resigned myself to just eating better until I can start Crossfit again when I move.

I also made a trek out to my cottage, just for the weekend. But it was greatly needed! Along the way, I stopped to see some friends in Toronto, and meet up with some messageboard ladies. I mean, they were all on the way, so why not?

Sushi box!

Look at that sashimi.

My favourite day though was the Saturday at the cottage. It was a beautiful, perfect day. It was the only time I had to myself for the last 4 years, with no responsibility to be had. I might not get this again. I savoured it with a good red wine, watermelon and feta, and steak. Delicious steak. The next day was rainy but it allowed me to have a sleep in without an alarm - again, something I might not get again for a while. Savouring yet again.

Check that skirt!

Home has been quiet busy, and definitely my to-do list is lessened but not complete. I might have to get used to that again, with only two full days left once I'm back from Ireland.

Yup - I am going back. Tomorrow. I'll be spending about a week there, the main purpose being graduation, but of course, that's not quite all I'm doing. All that will come later.

For now though, the important blog news.

This is something that I have thought about for the last little while, since matching to a residency - the future of this blog. I've discussed it with many people, and though the feedback has been generally to the effect of "keep it!", I think I have to go in another direction.

Nearly four years ago, I had originally started it to get an unsugarcoated account of changing careers, moving to another continent and going through medical school. It was a way to keep those close to me updated, which made my life much easier when re-connecting with them during breaks. As I quickly learned, not everything goes as planned. It became about more than medical school, and due to the nature of the profession, couldn't be totally unsugarcoated and explicit. It taught me much about communication and intricacies of sensitivity, while allowing me to pursue one of my favourite outlets - writing.

But it has come to an end. Not necessarily the end of me blogging, but for this particular blog - its purpose has very nearly been fulfilled.

I've decided to finish this blog upon the start of my residency, which means there are about 2-3 posts left to right between now and then. That will be the official transition between student and resident, so the ending seems natural.

Now for some good news.

There is a very strong possibility that I will start a new blog, themed around residency in rural medicine. I have some big ideas for it, after what I've learned keeping this one. However, before I do this, I want to speak with some of the residency administrators to have a discussion about it, as I want to be sure nothing I do jeopardizes my career, their reputation, patient confidentiality, or anything within that realm.

If nothing else, I have a record of my medical school adventure - fours years worth of adventure, growth, experiences and even the most mundane banalities in between. I consider myself quite lucky to have this.

So - if you've kept with me this far, this is what I suggest you do if you would like to be on the potential new blog's mailing list or even just updated on its fate.

Option 1 - If you are not part of my mailing list already, go to my homepage at http://ift.tt/2rGeH0h; In the "Follow my posts by email" box to the right, fill in your email address and hit Submit. This adds you to the mailing list, which allows me easy communication to my followers.

Option 2 - Send an email to medpathnosugar@gmail.com stating that you want to be informed of what's happening. I can add you to the mailing list myself. You may get the last few blogs before the start of July that are posted, depending on when I update the list. But you will be informed one way or another once the necessary discussions have been had.

There is no obligation, of course, to do either option, but I wanted to give the opportunity in advance to sign up, mourn or just simply let the final chapter run its course. This blog will cease to be updated after the first week of July, so that is the unofficial deadline to do this.

I will post a reminder at the end of the final blogs as well in case its missed in this one.

In the meantime - I'm off to Ireland tomorrow, and when I'm back there is the road trip out west, plus a couple more things before my July 4th start date ... so there will definitely be adventures to be recounted.

Now - even though the end is near, grab the good glasses and your drink of choice, and settle in for these last few weeks!
