Space Light Technology May Help Regenerate Damaged Nerves

Today's post from healthworkstx.wordpress.com (see link below) is part advertisement for a new technology and part very interesting article about a potential new treatment for neuropathy. Via infra-red light technology, it's claimed that the increased health of the blood vessels surrounding damaged nerves will promote nerve regeneration unless there's more than 85% nerve damage. Big claims for such a simple procedure you might think and you'd be right. Whether this actually works and for how many patients is yet to be proved and tested on a large scale but the idea is attractive and long-term neuropathy patients will always be attracted by new and attractive propositions (when all else brings very limited relief). Taking it with a pinch of salt at the moment may be the best advice but it's worth doing a bit of research on.

NASA Light-Emitting Diode Technology Brings Relief In Clinical Trials

The light is produced by light emitting diodes, or LEDs. They are used in hundreds of applications, from electronic clock dis plays to jumbo TV screens. LEDs provide light for plants grown on the Space Station as part of commercial experiments sponsored by industry. Researchers discovered the diodes also had many promising medical applications, prompting NASA to fund this research as well, through its Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Biologists have found that cells exposed to near-infrared light from LEDs, which is energy just outside the visible range, grow 150 to 200 percent faster than cells not stimulated by such light. The light arrays increase energy inside cells that speed up the healing process.

How Does Infrared Light Therapy Work?

Infrared energy causes your cells to release a molecule called nitric oxide, which enhances blood flow. Nitric oxide is the key to the dramatic improvements that patients see with use of Infrared Light Therapy. This short-lived gas is crucial to the health of your arteries. The resulting increase in blood flow brings oxygen and nutrients to injured or painful areas which results in faster healing times. It also reduces pain and inflammation.

What Is a Typical Infrared Light Therapy Session Like?

Treatment with infrared light therapy is simple and painless. Soft, flexible pads, each containing dozens of infrared lights, are placed directly on the skin over the area of pain or injury. Energy from the lights penetrates beneath the skin and is absorbed deep into the tissues. After just 20 minutes of treatment, blood flow is enhanced by 400 percent, and this boost in local circulation persists for several hours after the pads are removed. The most dramatic benefits of infrared light therapy are achieved with multiple treatment sessions. For neuropathy patients, three 20-minutes sessions each week give the very best results.

How does Infrared Light Therapy Help Peripheral Neuropathy?

The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow of astronauts for areas of wound healing. The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper. The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope!
